Shanty Bay Wharf Community Consultation

At the Feb 14, 2024, meeting of Council, the future of both Hawkestone and Shanty Bay Wharfs were discussed. Both wharfs are in need of capital investment, and since they are constructed differently, they require distinct considerations. Hawkestone required immediate repairs given damages incurred from recent storms and was prioritized accordingly considering its condition. The wharf in Shanty Bay has surpassed its expected service life due to the advanced concrete deterioration, and the condition of the underlying wood crib structure. After further engineering review following the February staff report, the optimal solution for Shanty Bay, in comparing repair to replace, would be to replace. While there is no immediate concern of failure, it does need to be addressed in the next five years.

Thank you for your input!

The following reports provide the background detail around the wharfs, including the condition assessments, and the Parks and Recreation Master Plan. Please review this information as it will ensure that you can make an informed decision when completing the survey. Please note that since the Shanty Bay Wharf has surpassed its expected service life, it likely would be more accurate to say that due to the advanced concrete deterioration, as well as the condition of the underlying wood crib structure, extensive repairs to extend the useful life of the existing components would require significant investment, rather than being cost-prohibitive.
