Please contact Environmental Services to report a streetlight outage. Streetlight maintenance and repair is prioritized using the criteria outlined in the Streetlight Policy being a critical failure, adherence to Ontario Regulation for Minimum Maintenance standards for Municipal Highways followed by all other general maintenance requests.
Streetlights
There are currently over 1,100 streetlights located in the Township of Oro-Medonte, with over 900 owned and operated by the Township across its urbanized and rural areas and maintained through a dedicated inspection/maintenance program implemented by the Environmental Services. The remaining streetlights located across the Township are owned and operated by others including the Province of Ontario, the County of Simcoe, developers (yet to be assumed) and lights rented from Hydro One by property owners.
Oro-Medonte is committed to protecting the night sky by reducing light pollution, while maintaining the safety and security afforded by streetlights, by implementing several dark sky friendly strategies into the Township streetlight program and Development Engineering Policies, Process and Design Standards.
Over the next several years, Oro-Medonte will be working towards ensuring that all Township streetlights employ full-cut-off fixtures. These fixtures direct light to the roadway where it is intended while preventing light dispersion and glare where it is not.
Streetlight Charges
The majority of Oro-Medonte Municipal streetlights are located within urbanized areas (i.e., lands that are located within a Registered Plan of Subdivision and/or identified settlement area) Within these urbanized areas and in accordance with the Taxation By-law, benefitting landowners are currently assessed a flat rate charge of $57 per year for the operation and maintenance of streetlights. In 2023, Council directed Township staff to apply exemptions to the user fee streetlight charge to any properties without streetlights directly on their street starting in the 2024 taxation year.
Other Township owned and operated streetlights that are located outside of urbanized areas are considered a benefit to the public at large and financed through the general tax levy.
To ensure fair and consistent application of streetlight charges, the Taxation By-law is updated annually to account for the municipal assumption of new infrastructure as well as regular internal auditing activities of land records and streetlight accounts.
How to Report a Streetlight Outage?
How to Request a New Streetlight?
Requests for new streetlights and/or changes in existing streetlights on existing Township assumed road allowances must be made from a community group or group of residents as opposed to a single individual and include documentation with greater than 75% support from the local serviced area. Procedures for submitting requests are outlined in the Streetlight Policy.
